WHAT ABOUT RECYCLING?

The Township provides for drop off recycling at the Township building, 971 North Colebrook Road the second Saturday of every month from 7:30 to 11 AM.  A permit is required from the Township Office to deposit your recycling materials.  Permits are $24, and are valid for one year.  Calendar year starts November 1st and runs to the end of the following October.  You may drop off your glass (clear and colored), cans (aluminum and bimetallic), and #1 and #2 plastics, like white milk jugs, detergent bottles and #1 and #2 liter soda bottles.  Plastic tub-type containers, even if they are listed as #1 or #2 should be disposed of in your regular trash.  Plastic containers which are recyclable should have a neck which is smaller than the body of the container.  Whip cream, margarine and fresh fruit tubs are examples of plastics that are not recyclable.  Please rinse the above items once or twice; you do not need to remove labels.  Plastics, glass and aluminum/bimetallic may be comingled in manageable containers.  We prefer you use a recycle bin, laundry basket or similar size cardboard box.  Please keep the weight of the container to 20 lbs or less so it can be easily managed by therecycle crew.  Do not tie plastic bags; use a clothes pin or twist tie to close the bags.  Newspapers and phone books are also accepted, but no magazines, catalogs or glossy print.  The above items are the only items that will be accepted.  Positively no dropping off before 7:30 AM.  Please stay in your car and follow the direction of one of the recycle helpers.

Those residents who have trash pick up at their residence are offered curb side recycling from their trash hauler.    You will obtain your recycle bucket from your trash hauler.  Contact your trash hauler with any questions or to start pick-up and to determine if there will be any extra charge.

The Township pays our township waste hauler, York Waste Disposal, to pick up the recyclables and transport them to Recycle America in York County.  There they undergo separation into the various categories and eventually reach the recycling manufacturer.  Products that have been placed in the recyclables that are not capable of being recycled are then disposed of in the land fill.

Rapho is eligible for recycling grant funding which is derived from the tipping fees associated with recycling operations.  The Lancaster Solid Waste Management Authority distributes the grant money based on the tonnage of recycled goods and the percent of recycled goods.  Grant money is not paid out for that particular calendar year - the moneywe receive is from two years previous.  Rapho Township received $4,931 in grant money for 2004, although the funds were only received in 2006.  The more we recycle, the greater the reimbursement will be - so let's recycle Rapho!

If you have any questions, please call the Township office at 665-3827 between the hours of 8 AM and 3 PM, Monday through Friday.
