Recycling Information

Rapho Township Recycling Information for Residents that Do Not Have a Trash Hauler:

The Township provides for drop off recycling at the Township building, 971 North Colebrook Road the second Saturday of every month from 7:30 to 11 AM.  A permit is required from the Township Office to deposit your recycling materials.  Permits are $24, and are valid for one year.  Calendar year starts November 1st and runs to the end of the following October.

When bringing your recyclables please have them in a recycle bin, laundry basket or similar size cardboard box. Do not tie plastic bags; use a clothes pin or a twist tie to close the bags.

Please keep the weight of the container to 20 lbs. or less so it can be easily managed by the recycle crew.

Positively no dropping off before 7:30 AM.   Please stay in your car and follow the direction of one of the recycle helpers.

Recycling Information Guidelines:

Every 2ND Saturday of every month between the hours of 7:30am & 11:00am at the office building located at 971 North Colebrook Road, you are able to drop off your recyclables with an annual permit that can be obtained at the township office Monday through Friday between 8:00am & 3:30pm.

Preparing your Materials for the Recycle Bin

  • Glass: Clear, green and brown glass food and beverage bottles and jars should be thoroughly rinsed and lids should be removed. Throw the lids in the trash. It is not necessary to remove labels.
    • Do Not Put in the Bin - Light bulbs, window and auto glass, drinking glasses and cookware are not recyclable and should be put in the trash.
  • Metals: All food and beverage cans which are made from aluminum, steel, tin or a combination of metals should be rinsed prior to placing in the recycling bin.
    • Do Not Put in the Bin - Other aluminum and metal products like foil, pie plates, aerosol cans and hangers are not recyclable and should be put in the trash.
  • Plastics: Plastic household containers with a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 in the triangle on the bottom of the container. Plastic containers should be thoroughly rinsed and lids removed.
    • Do Not Put in the Bin - plastic toys, plastic grocery bags, PVC pipe, plastic deck furniture and bottles that had contained hazardous or toxic substances such as motor oil containers, gasoline cans, glue, petroleum products etc. .

All of the above items may be commingled. NO PLASTIC BAGS OF ANY KIND will be put in the dumpster.  Plastic bags, including garbage bags, get tangled in the recycle machines and cause delays in processing.  Please BRING YOUR RECYCLABLES IN BOXES, BINS, TRASHCANS OR BARRELS THAT CAN BE EASILY DUMPED AND TAKEN WITH YOU .

Newspapers and phone books are also accepted and must be kept separate.  (No cardboard, magazines, catalogues or glossy print).

The above items are the only items that will be accepted.   Positively no dropping off before 7:30 a.m.   If you have any questions, call the Township Office at 665-3827 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

                                                      RAPHO TOWNSHIP

                                                      BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

Those residents who have trash pickup at their residence are offered curb side recycling from their trash hauler.  You can request a recycle bin from your trash hauler.  Contact your trash hauler with any questions or to start pick-up and to determine if there will be any extra charge.

The Township pays the Township waste hauler, Waste Management, to pick up the recyclables and transport them to the Lancaster Transfer Station.  There they undergo separation into the various categories and eventually reach the recycling manufacturer.  Products that have been placed in the recyclables that are not capable of being recycled are then disposed of in the land fill.

Rapho is eligible for recycling grant funding which is derived from the tipping fees associated with recycling operations.  The Lancaster Solid Waste Management Authority fills out the yearly grant application and forwards it to the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection for the distribution of the grant money that is available.  The grant money is based on the tonnage of recycled goods and the percent of recycled goods.  Grant money is not paid out for that particular calendar year - the money the Township receives is from two years previous.  Rapho Township received $11,113.00 in grant money for 2009. The more we recycle, the greater the reimbursement will be - so let's recycle Rapho!

If you have any questions, please call the Township office at 665-3827 between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.
